El Gouna Travel Guide: Lagoons and Kites

El Gouna travel guide for 2026: lagoon hotels from 95 USD, kitesurfing at Mangroovy, Abu Nuhas wreck dives, the October film festival and Luxor by road.

October 30, 202611 min read

By mid-afternoon the north-north-west wind is at full strength, and the shallow water off Mangroovy Beach has become a slow carousel of coloured kites. A couple of kilometres inland the lagoons are perfectly still: a shuttle boat idles past Downtown's ochre domes, tuk-tuks wait by a bridge, and someone at Abu Tig Marina is already ordering a drink as the light goes gold. El Gouna is the Red Sea at its most organised, a private lagoon town built on dredged channels and reclaimed islands about 25 km (16 miles) north of Hurghada.

It began in 1989, when the Sawiris family started building on an empty stretch of coast, and it has grown into something closer to a small town than a resort: nearly twenty hotels on the official listing, a chain of marinas, a hospital, two golf courses and residents who stay on after the visitors fly home. That makes it a very different stay from the long hotel strip south of it. This guide covers how El Gouna fits together, how to get there and around without a car, where to stay at each budget, the kite and dive scene, the film festival, Luxor by road, and the best months to go.

How the Town Fits Together

El Gouna is a cluster of low islands joined by bridges and threaded with lagoons, so most hotels and villas have water on at least one side. Figures for its coastline vary between sources, from about 10 km to 18 km depending on what is being measured, but the useful number is smaller: the two hubs, Downtown and Abu Tig Marina, are about seven minutes apart by road.

Downtown grew up around Tamr Henna Square, a palm-lined plaza of cafรฉs and shops that gets busier after dark, sometimes with music or a tanoura dance show. Close by is the small El Gouna Museum, with more than 90 pieces including replica statues and works by the Egyptian artist Hussein Bikar, and Kafr El Gouna, the older residential quarter with painted houses and craft shops. Downtown hotels sit on lagoons rather than the open sea, which suits families and anyone who prefers calm water.

Abu Tig Marina is the evening end of town: yachts, waterfront restaurants and the bars that fill up after sunset. It was designed by the Italian architect Alfredo Freda with a deliberately Venetian look. The marina network, which also includes the newer Fanadir basin and the original Abydos Marina of 1990, offers some 660 berths for yachts of up to 70 m. Even if you never board a boat, the promenade is where most people end up after dinner.

Getting There From Hurghada and Cairo

Hurghada International Airport is the gateway, with more than 60 daily flights and plenty of direct services from Europe, many about four hours from the major capitals. Published distances from the airport range from about 22 km to 40 km depending on the route and which island you are heading for; in practice it is 25 to 30 minutes in the car, closer to 45 for the far northern hotels. Our private Hurghada airport transfer meets you in arrivals at a fixed price, and the town's partner limousine service advertised transfers from 525 EGP (just under 10 USD, about 8.50 EUR) as of autumn 2026.

From Cairo, a domestic flight to Hurghada takes about an hour, and the drive down the coast via the Galala road takes roughly four to five hours depending on where in the capital you start. Go Bus runs more than fifteen departures a day between Cairo and Downtown El Gouna, which is the cheapest option and perfectly comfortable. Combining the coast with the Nile Valley is easy; our Red Sea resorts comparison weighs El Gouna against Hurghada, Sharm, Dahab and Marsa Alam if you are still choosing.

Getting Around Without a Car

The tuk-tuk is the town's taxi. Three operators run them, with hours that stretch from early morning to well after midnight; you flag one at the stands in Downtown or the marina, or ask your hotel to call. Fares are small and paid in cash, usually a few tens of pounds for a hop across town, well under a dollar; reported prices vary, so agree the fare before you set off.

A shuttle boat links Downtown with Zeytouna Island across the lagoon, and also runs guided water tours past Abu Tig Marina and the New Marina in English and German. Most hotels operate their own buses, an internal bus follows fixed routes for a few pounds, and bicycles are easy to rent. Driving is possible but pointless for most visitors; the speed limit is 60 km/h on paved roads, and driving off-road is prohibited.

Where to Stay by Budget

The official town site lists from-rates for each hotel. These are starting prices as of autumn 2026, and the busiest weeks, from Christmas and New Year to Easter and festival week, typically cost well above them.

  • Around 95 to 110 USD: Fanadir Hotel and Mosaique in the New Marina, plus Turtle's Inn and the three-star Captain's Inn at Abu Tig Marina. Marina hotels without their own beach usually give guests access to nearby beach clubs.
  • Around 115 to 250 USD: Three Corners Rihana in Downtown for families, Sultan Bey and Cook's Club in Downtown, the adults-only Three Corners Ocean View at the marina, Ali Pasha, Club Paradisio, Ancient Sands, and the big resorts of Mรถvenpick, Sheraton Miramar and Steigenberger Golf.
  • Above 250 USD: the adults-only Casa Cook in Downtown, The Chedi, and La Maison Bleue, the most expensive on the list at about 465 USD.

Apartments and villas, some with private pools, are widely available through the usual rental platforms and suit longer stays or groups. If nightlife matters, stay at the marina; if quiet matters, pick a lagoon hotel in Downtown or one of the self-contained resorts.

Beaches, Lagoons and Island Days

The lagoon water is calm and shallow, good for children and paddleboards, though town rules require proper swimwear in pools and lagoons. For sea beaches, El Gouna works through beach clubs: Moods and Marina Beach near Abu Tig, Zeytouna Beach on its own island reached by boat, Makani and La Playa, Zouni at Mangroovy, and The Smokery Beach, opened in 2016 as the town's first fully serviced beach. Several charge an entry fee that is not published centrally, so ask at your hotel, which often has an arrangement.

The classic day out is by boat to the islands offshore. Mahmya, on the Giftun islands, caps visitor numbers, and day packages were advertised at 40 to 60 USD in mid-2026; book at least a day ahead. Our Giftun Island snorkelling trip visits the same reefs. Tawila Island, flat and white-sanded, is the other favourite and is also popular with kiters.

Kitesurfing at Mangroovy and Buzzha

El Gouna is one of the best places in the world to learn to kite, for one simple reason: you can stand up almost everywhere. At Buzzha Beach the main lagoon is shallow and covers more than 2 sq km, and its water level varies by roughly 20 to 70 cm depending on the tide. The catch is that in summer, particularly around the full moon, it can drain for a few hours and push everyone outside the reef. At Mangroovy the sand shelf runs several hundred metres offshore before it drops away.

The wind is side-onshore from the north-north-west, which is what makes it forgiving: if something goes wrong, you drift back towards the beach rather than out to sea. Windfinder's station at the El Gouna Kiteboarding Club, with records running from 2006 to September 2026, gives an annual average of 12 knots, and long-term data for this coast put the windiest stretch from late May to early October. Beginner courses at the biggest centre started from 465 EUR (about 520 USD) as of autumn 2026, and to rent kit without a course you need a recognised licence; the biggest centre, for example, asks for VDWS level 3 or above. Our full guide to kitesurfing in Egypt compares this coast with Soma Bay, Dahab and Hamata.

Diving and Snorkelling Day Trips

Five dive centres are listed in town, between them teaching PADI, SSI and CMAS courses, and their day boats head for the same reefs and wrecks that Hurghada uses, returning to El Gouna each evening. Two of them run programmes and boats adapted for divers with reduced mobility, which is still unusual on this coast. Introductory dives were advertised from roughly 60 to 80 USD in mid-2026; our Hurghada introductory dive is the gentle version, with no certification needed.

El Gouna is the natural base for the Strait of Gubal and the wreck reef of Abu Nuhas, where several ships lie around a single reef. Carless Reef suits confident Open Water divers, and the walls and canyons of Small Giftun are better for experienced ones. The great wreck of the region, the SS Thistlegorm, is a long day by boat from here and calls for an advanced certification. Our Red Sea diving and snorkelling guide covers the wider coast.

The El Gouna Film Festival

Since 2017 the town has hosted one of the Arab world's most visible film festivals. The ninth edition ran from 15 to 23 October 2026, with screenings centred on the festival plaza and venues between Abu Tig Marina and Downtown, and 77 films from around the world.

Access works through accreditation, with categories for industry, press, students, cinephiles and residents, while some public screening tickets are released through the festival's own channels. If the pattern holds the tenth edition will fall in October 2027, but dates are announced during the year, so check before booking flights; our Egypt events calendar for 2027 will carry them. Festival week fills hotel rooms quickly, and it is one of the few times the town feels busy.

Insider Tip: Choose Your Island for Your Day

El Gouna is small, but where you sleep shapes the trip more than people expect. Kiters should stay at the northern end, close to Mangroovy and Buzzha, where a few hotels have kite centres on their own beaches. Anyone who wants to walk out to dinner every night belongs at Abu Tig Marina. Families tend to be happiest at a Downtown lagoon hotel with shallow water outside the room. A short taxi ride makes all of these fixable, but over a week the walking distance adds up.

Day Trips to Luxor

Luxor is the great counterweight to a beach week, and from El Gouna it is a real undertaking: Hurghada to Luxor is four to five hours each way across the Eastern Desert, and El Gouna adds another half hour. A day trip is therefore a 14 to 16 hour day, with a pre-dawn start, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the West Bank, Karnak Temple on the East Bank, and a late return. Shared minibus trips were advertised at 40 to 70 USD per person in 2026.

It works, and our Luxor day trip from Hurghada runs privately at your own pace. With two days to spare, though, we would almost always suggest a one-way Hurghada to Luxor transfer and a night on the Nile instead, so you see the West Bank in the cool of the morning rather than at midday.

Best Time to Visit El Gouna

The town's own advice is that spring and autumn are the most popular seasons, and the numbers agree. Long-term averages for this stretch of coast give daytime highs of about 22 C (72 F) in January, 30 C (86 F) in April, 37 to 38 C (99 to 100 F) in July and August, and 32 C (90 F) in October, with nights around 11 C (52 F) in January. Rain is rare. Hot, dusty khamsin winds can blow in from the desert, most often in April, and cloud the water for a day or so.

  • March to May: warm days, a cool sea at first, and wind building towards summer
  • June to September: hot, with the most reliable kiting wind and the warmest water, around 28 C (82 F) in August
  • October and November: our favourite window, with warm water, softer heat and the festival
  • December to February: winter sun, cool evenings and a sea of about 21 to 24 C (70 to 75 F), when many swimmers want a wetsuit

Winter is peak season for European visitors, so book six to eight weeks ahead for December and January. Our Egypt weather month by month guide sets this coast against the rest of the country.

Good to Know: Money, Dress and Town Rules

El Gouna runs on Egyptian pounds, and although many places accept euros and dollars, paying in pounds is usually cheaper; ATMs are easy to find. Alcohol is widely served in hotels, bars and marina restaurants, and dress is relaxed by Egyptian standards. The town has its own hospital, a security team on patrol around the clock, and noise rules that end loud music at midnight on weekdays and at 1am at weekends. Driving off-road is not allowed, so desert outings go with licensed operators.

Planning Your Stay

El Gouna rewards a slower pace than most of Egypt: four or five nights is enough to try the lagoons, take a boat to the islands and have one long day in the water or on a kite. It pairs naturally with Cairo at the start and Luxor at the end, and the road links make a one-way route easier than doubling back.

If you would like us to arrange the pieces, from the airport pick-up to a private Luxor extension, tell us your dates, who is travelling and how active you want the beach days to be, and we will suggest a shape that fits. You can reach the team through our contact page at any hour.
