The White Desert (Sahara el-Beyda) is a national park in Egypt's Western Desert, located between the Bahariya and Farafra oases. Its signature landscape of chalk-white rock formations — sculpted by millions of years of wind erosion into mushroom shapes, pillars, towers, and abstract forms — creates one of the most otherworldly scenes on Earth. Camping overnight among the formations under a canopy of stars is one of Egypt's most unforgettable experiences.

Why Visit

The most surreal natural landscape in Egypt — chalk-white sculptures in golden desert
Overnight desert camping with Bedouin guides under the Milky Way
Sunrise and sunset transform the formations into a constantly changing art gallery

What to See

Chalk Formations
The iconic chalk-white rock formations have been sculpted by wind erosion into an astonishing variety of shapes — mushrooms, pillars, animals, and abstract sculptures that seem to defy gravity. Some of the most famous formations have been nicknamed 'the Chicken and the Mushroom,' 'the Sphinx,' and 'the Ice Cream Cone.' The chalk glows pink and orange at sunset, ghostly white under moonlight, and dazzling white in the midday sun. Walking among them feels like exploring another planet.
Overnight Camping
The quintessential White Desert experience is camping overnight. Bedouin guides set up camp among the formations, cook traditional food over open fires (typically grilled chicken, rice, salads, and tea), and share stories under a sky ablaze with stars. With zero light pollution, the Milky Way is clearly visible. Waking up to watch the sunrise slowly illuminate the white formations is a moment of pure magic.
Crystal Formation Areas
Parts of the White Desert contain fields of crystal quartz fragments scattered across the desert floor, sparkling in the sunlight like a natural treasure trove. These crystal areas add yet another dimension to the park's otherworldly landscape.

Visitor Tips

  • Book a 2-day/1-night desert safari from Bahariya Oasis for the full experience
  • Full moon nights are the most magical — the formations glow ethereally in the moonlight
  • Bring warm layers — desert nights are cold (can drop below 5°C even in autumn)
  • Photography is best at sunrise, sunset, and by moonlight — midday light is flat and harsh
  • The park requires a permit and a registered guide — you cannot enter independently
