Wadi El-Rayan is a protected area in the Fayoum depression featuring two man-made lakes connected by Egypt's only waterfalls. Created in the 1970s by channeling agricultural drainage water into the desert valley, the area has developed into a thriving ecosystem and popular nature destination. The surrounding desert offers sandboarding, birdwatching, and access to the nearby Wadi Al-Hitan fossil site.

A peaceful nature escape just two hours from Cairo

What to See

The Waterfalls
Water cascades through a rocky channel connecting the upper and lower lakes, creating a small but picturesque waterfall that is Egypt's only one. The surrounding area is lush with reeds and vegetation, attracting birds and creating an oasis-like setting in the heart of the desert. The falls are most impressive after the agricultural season when water flow is at its peak.
Sand Dunes & Sandboarding
Towering golden sand dunes line the shores of the lower lake, offering excellent sandboarding opportunities. Boards can be rented from vendors near the waterfalls. The combination of golden dunes, blue lake water, and clear desert sky makes for spectacular scenery.
Birdwatching & Wildlife
The lakes have become an important habitat for migratory birds, including flamingos, herons, and ducks. The surrounding Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area is also home to the endangered slender-horned gazelle, fennec foxes, and Egyptian eagles. Early morning visits offer the best wildlife sightings.
